Overview

The andaman islands, an indian archipelago in the bay of bengal, are a stunning tropical paradise known for their pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and rich biodiversity. Consisting of over 500 islands, the archipelago is divided into two main groups: the andaman islands and the nicobar islands. The andaman islands are more developed and accessible to tourists, while the nicobar islands remain largely off-limits due to their indigenous communities and protected status.

The andamans are famous for their unspoiled natural beauty. With lush rainforests, diverse marine life, and coral reefs, they offer an ideal setting for eco-tourism. The clear waters around the islands are perfect for diving, snorkeling, and water sports. Popular destinations like havelock island (now swaraj dweep) and neil island (shaheed dweep) are renowned for their serene beaches, vibrant marine ecosystems, and opportunities for adventure tourism.

The andaman islands are also home to several indigenous tribes, some of whom live in isolation. The indigenous tribes, like the great andamanese, the onge, the jarwa, and the nicobarese, have their own distinct cultures and ways of life. While they are protected by law, their way of life is threatened by modern development and tourism.

Port blair, the capital of the andaman and nicobar islands, is the main entry point for visitors. The city is home to several historical sites, including the cellular jail, a colonial-era prison that housed indian freedom fighters during the british raj. The andaman islands also offer opportunities for eco-tourism with wildlife sanctuaries, bird watching, and nature trails.

Highlights

The Andaman & Nicobar are a group of picturesque Islands, big and small, inhabited and uninhabited, a total of 572 islands, islets and rocks lying in the South Eastern Part of the Bay of Bengal. They lie along an arc in long and narrow broken chain, approximately North-South over a distance nearly 800 kms. The isolation has helped evolve a large number of endemic birds on these islands. On the Andaman Islands Endemic Birding Tour, we will be visiting the Andaman Island in search of these birds especially the endemics - total of 20 in number. But since five occur only on the Nicobars (currently off-limits to foreigners), only 17 would be sighted. The notable areas visited during the Andaman Endemic Birding Tour are Mount Harriet, Sippi Ghat, Chidia Tapu, Farar Ganj & Havelock. The endemics include four owls and other species such as Andaman Woodpecker, Andaman Crake and Andaman Serpent Eagle.
